Here are my top five films of 2012 and some mini-reviews.

1. The Master (10/10)

This film is a superb character study. It is brilliantly acted and beautifully shot. Paul Thomas Anderson is my favourite director.

2. Zero Dark Thirty (10/10)

It is engaging from start to finish and is very well directed, well written and well acted.

Director Kathryn Bigelow really should have been nominated for an Oscar and I can't stress how great Jessica Chastain is in everything she's in.

Despite some criticism being levelled at the political aspects of the film, I never felt like it advocated torture at all.

3. Django Unchained (10/10)

At risk of sounding like a Quentin Tarantino fanboy, I think this film was excellent.

Samuel L Jackson's acting was the highlight for me.

4. West of Memphis (10/10)

This film is better than any of the Paradise Lost documentaries about the West Memphis Three, who were accused of murder.

While this film delves deeper, it does not comprehensively convince the audience of Terry Hobbs' guilt.

I have no doubt that Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, Jr are all innocent.

A well-made film with a brilliant and haunting score from Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.

Although, my viewing experience may have been slightly altered as Echols, Peter Jackson and Lori Davis were in attendance when I saw it.

5. Seven Psychopaths (9/10)

An excellent cast brings an excellent script to life. And with all the talented actors involved, Sam Rockwell almost steals the show.

Killing Them Softly, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Searching for Sugar Man, Argo and Looper.
