ASSIGNMENT:

Raising a child with special education needs

We want to hear about the joys and the struggles of having a child with complex needs.
BRUNO NASCIMENTO/UNSPLASH

We want to hear about the joys and the struggles of having a child with complex needs.

The exclusion of autistic children from schools in New Zealand is a growing problem, says Autism NZ. 10-year-old Ethan Forbes has been through five schools in five years - and he's not the only one.

We want to hear about your experiences of raising a child with special education needs. Has your child's school been helpful, or have you struggled to get the support your child needs? What would you like teachers to know about children with complex needs - whether that's autism, developmental delay, or another disability?

Outside education, how has your family navigated the process of getting a diagnosis, medical treatment and support?

And from financial barriers to a lack of social acceptance, what other issues have you experienced?

We'd also love to hear about the positive side of raising a child with special education needs - perhaps they've changed your perspective on the world for the better, or maybe you've built relationships you never would have done otherwise.
