Will any of the politics and off-field issues make a difference this year?

The Chiefs go in as defending champions and will be searching for their third consecutive title.

Led by Sir John Kirwan, the Blues will be hungry to achieve after a much improved performance last year. Benji Marshall will also want to prove he's got what it takes to wear the 10.

The Hurricanes remain overdue to perform and must be feeling the pressure of the need to make the playoffs. The Highlanders show promise again and will want to impress new sponsor Otago University.

The always-solid Crusaders remain overdue for a title and coach Todd Blackadder will be feeling the one-eyed pressure of the fans to deliver.
