Doing up an old classic is a great exercise in pride and we asked readers to share their joy with us. Mike Coveney obliged, sending in a photo of his '63 Mercury Comet fastback.

This is a predecessor to the Ford Mustang, but now after three years work many would choose it over the better-known later model.

I purchased it off Trade Me from a guy in Warkworth and it came in from California.

It has been upgraded with Mustang running gear from the 66 model with a 289 V8 three speed automatic transmission. Originally it was a 260 V8 and two speed auto. It's now got brisk acceleration without being over the top.

I'm soon putting in a four speed auto from an 88 Mustang to aid with fuel economy when driving on the open road.

It's got air conditioning and power disc brakes, powersteering and a good sound system.

Most of the modernisation is underneath, so as not to take away the car's character.

She has just turned 50, and will hopefully be around for a another 50.

It handles reasonably well for its age, a big swaybar on the front stopped a lot of the sway yank cars are known for, so it goes it where it's pointed.

Specs:

  • Disc brakes
  • Powersteer
  • Air Con
  • 289 V8
  • Four speed auto
