Best camping grounds: A hidden gem
Map: NZ's best camping grounds
Our interactive map below features some of our readers' favourite camping grounds in New Zealand. Heather Carston submitted Murupara Motor Camp.
This camp is smack-bang in the gateway to the Te Urewera Ranges and the Whirinaki Forest.
There is a mountain bike trail, guided trips to see rare birds, Te Whaiti Nui-a-Toi canyon and a myriad of rivers such as Rangitaiki, Whirinaki, and Horomunga. You can catch trophy trout or go white water rafting or kayaking.
The camp is one of the most peaceful places in the world, sitting on the edge of the forest and river.
There are native trees and fruit trees throughout the camp, yet it's just just 100 metres from the township centre, on the main road.
There are cabins, powered and non-powered camp sites and a large hall for private functions.
There is a fully-equipped kitchen, laundry and spa.
The camp also has vegetable gardens and herb pots for use by guests and permanent residents.
It's the perfect place to stay if you need peace and quiet in safe surroundings, in a place time has forgotten about - even if the myriad of tourists from all over Europe haven't.
