Best swimming spots: Blue Spring
Our readers have been helping us map (see below) New Zealand's best swimming holes. Blue Spring is Carrie Moulden's pick for a beautiful spot with crystal clear water.
On Whites Road just out of Putaururu is a place with crystal clear water not often seen in the northern parts of New Zealand. The water is filtered of all the particles that would normally absorb light which gives it a blue clear tinge. At 12 metres the spring looks about two metres deep.
The water is a chilling 11 degrees all year and comes from a spring. The water originates in the Mamaku ranges and can take over 100 years travelling underground to reach the outlet.
It is a fast flowing river, so with 42 cubic metres coming from the spring per minute. This limits the safe places to swim, but there are a couple of key places - one being the blue spring itself.
You can walk across the river, which is about waist deep to the spring. The water is 12 metres deep at the source of the spring.
It's a 90-minute walk upstream from the car park on Whites Road.
