Places to take your dog on holiday
Our interactive map below features Stuff Nation reader's picks for the best places to take a pet on holiday. Annalie Brown names her five favourites.
We have a dog and a campervan so we're used to trawling the country for pet-friendly spots. Some of my favourites are:
Waitarere Beach: Closer to Wellington than Foxton or Himitanga. There are two campsites, both dog-friendly. There's a dairy, a cafe and a couple of fish and chip shops. It's a place to get away from it all as the phone reception is bad.
Taupo: We just returned from a weekend there and there are a couple of pet-friendly campsites (All Seasons and DeBretts).
The town seemed to have lots of dogs, and lots of the cafe owners/workers are happy to pet the pooches and provide water bowls without even being asked.
Lions Walk is a beautiful lakeside trail for a good walk.
Martinborough: The Top 10 Holiday Park is dog-friendly most of the year.
It's nice to wander between the wineries and sample the lovely cafes, like Medici, which has nice outdoor courtyard out the back where dogs are welcome.
Oakura: Near New Plymouth this is a great pet-friendly campsite right on by the beach. It's a great surf beach too. A great spot for chilling out and sharing beach time with the four legged friend.
Fitzroy Beach: Also, near New Plymouth this is another great beachfront campsite. It's right on the seafront walkway that takes you right into the city centre. Another great surf spot too.
