Canterbury residents face a cleanup today after a storm yesterday created at least two tornados, felled powerlines, sparked fires and pummelled the region with large hailstones.

Rodd Webb was at his home in Hakatere, Ashburton, about 3.30pm, when he heard loud banging on the roof.

As the banging increased he looked out the window and saw "golf balls were coming down".

Webb said the hail punctured the roof of his studio and deck, and dented his car outside.

The hail continued for about 20 minutes.

Webb and his partner managed to remove her quilting materials from the room when the storm started, so it was just a matter of mopping up today, and replacing the roof.
