The best place to live in NZ...
We moved down to Dunedin, from Christchurch, last December having absolutely fallen in love with the quaint Portside town of Port Chalmers.
Close enough to Dunedin city - a mere 10-minute drive - yet far enough away to feel like another world!
Port Chalmers is famous for being Ralph Hotere's home, and having a very large port that operates 24/7.
Stats will show that Port Chalmers has probably more artists, musos and writers per square metre than anywhere else in NZ.
Ok, perhaps I am biased since I am one, but most people you meet seem to be artists down here, or musicians. My neighbour is James Robinson, a previous Wallace Award winner no less!
We have gorgeous Bays, native bush and birdsong and easy walks.
Great bands play every weekend at Chicks Hotel, where so many well-known bands started out.
It's such a vibrant community, yet with so much respect for its history - think shipwrecks, ghosts, and even pirates.
With fabulous cafes, incredible retro shopping and soon-to-be contemporary jewellery gallery, this place mixes the new with the old. Even when it's cold here it is still a kinetically beautiful energising place.
I feel like we stumbled on a secret... I'm not even sure I should be sharing.
