Backcountry hut has it all to offer Stop the motorists of destruction

In light of new ideas to help maintain New Zealand's remote tracks and huts we want to know your favourite backcountry spots.

Jack Mace says his choice in the Waitomo/Pureora area offers something for everyone.

Waihaha Hut is my pick for a special backcountry site.

It's not far from Taupo and the access is easy - a couple of hours of pretty flat walking along the beautiful Waihaha River. It wouldn't take much effort to make the track suitable for bikers - even for wee kiddies.

Once you're in, the biodiversity is superb. Some of New Zealand's most impressive forest, full of kaka, kakariki, robins, bats, and deer.

There are blue ducks in the pool right outside the hut, which is also good for a cold dip on a hot day.
