In Kane Black Caps are able

Brendon McCullum should be a good captain. The traits are all there: hard nosed, aggressive, likeable, a gambler, tactical on the field and also very good with the media.

His one downfall is the obvious problem we've all seen of late (barring his 113 during this test): consistent run making.

Until this current test he hadn't scored a test century in three years. This from a batsman batting in the top six.

Batting long periods is what you must do in test cricket. Even when McCullum does score decent runs this is not always the case.

He'll never change, some say it's just the way he plays, others say it's downright reckless. Unless he starts to score 50s or greater on a much more consistent basis I can't see him keeping the top job for to much longer. Either his form will wane or his troublesome back will.

So where to from here? We can't go back to Ross Taylor even though that isn't a bad idea. It just won't happen under the Hesson regime. So we must look to the future.

The future is already here and it goes by the name of Kane Williamson. Young in years only Williamson already is entrenched in the set up.

He is a first choice selection and has been since the start of his career. He has captained in the under age New Zealand teams, he is a student of the game and he has very much an old head on very young shoulders.

In Williamson we have a player who is destined for greatness for New Zealand cricket. He has a great work ethic that can only rub off on to the other players.

Give him the reigns I say because in Kane we are very much able.
