Best holiday: Our remote island drama
Your best holiday ever?
We asked readers to share their memories of their best ever holiday. Lorraine Anderson talks about her most memorable holiday that still gets talked about these days...
It wasn't my best holiday, but it was the best holiday my two girls ever had.
My ex and I were earning very good money for years and we took the girls on some of the most fantastic overseas holidays imaginable and stayed in some wonderful luxurious resorts.
One year we took them to an island off the coast of Taree in NSW.
The deal here was you had to take all the food you would need for seven days and couldn't take a vehicle.
The "owners" supplied guests with an old Ford Transit van and were happy for the kids to drive them, licence or not! There were cute cabins on the island, around seven of them, and you were a long way from each other.
I had visions of my 13-year-old getting the van bogged down somewhere and worse still turning it over, which is exactly what happened! She thought it was hilarious while I was having a complete breakdown.
Needless to say we ran out of food after a few days and were starving. I started fondly looking at the grass and wondering what it would be like boiled up with a few insects added.
My kids talked endlessly about this holiday for years and all I remember was an absolute nightmare.
