My dog, Richie McCaw, has so far cost me around $3500. He has a congenital leg problem.

He started limping and we thought he'd dislocated it because he plays fairly roughly with his friend Daphne (from Scooby Doo).

A visit to the vet and a few x-rays later found the bones in his left front leg weren't growing properly. One wasn't growing at all and his leg was becoming bowed. We could get it operated on, or put him to sleep.

Most of the family were opting for the sleep, but one of my daughters and I wanted the operation. He was only a year old and he had so much life left to live if it could be fixed.

A visit to Pet Practice in Mill Street in Hamilton and a three-hour operation left him in a cast for about a week and caged for around six weeks.

He's all better now, and my bank account has recovered, and he's playing happily once more with his friend Daphne.
