When I was 12 and growing up in small town New Zealand the local radio station played country and western. It was torture.

At night I could sometimes pick up Radio Hauraki with intermittent static.

One day my big brother returned from the city with his record collection and among them was David Bowie's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars; it changed my world.

Bowie's wailing, searching vocals are complemented by Mick Ronson's soaring, thumping guitar.

From the apocalyptic Five Years to the semi auto-biographical Rock and Roll Suicide, there isn't a bum note. Bowie's finest hour in my opinion.

Also a huge joy from my brother's collection were Jethro Tull's Aqualung and Led Zeppelin IV.
