NCIS: LA star Chris O'Donnell has revealed how he was caught up in a mid-air drama that saw United States Air Marshals put a whole passenger plane into lockdown for a terrifying two hours.

O'Donnell told the story to the Sunday News' sister paper the Sunday Star-Times.

He and his wife were flying from Chicago to LA last year and were about two hours from landing when airline staff deliberately blocked the aisle with their carts, preventing anyone reaching the front of the plane.

O'Donnell figured out that two of the staff were actually armed Air Marshals.

"There was a group of [five] guys in the back that they didn't like. They were suspicious. And they locked down the plane with two hours to go in the flight. And it was crazy watching them."

The passengers were very nervous during the ordeal, O'Donnell said, but the plane landed safely.

"Cops were surrounding the plane. They came running on and grabbed these guys."

O'Donnell watched police instantly separate the men in the airport, then question each one.

"I don't know if they were up to anything or not, but it was scary."

NCIS: LA premieres tomorrow on TV3, at 8.30pm.
