A man has died after falling down the stairs at his Palmerston North flat complex.
The man, who was thought to be in his 50s, was found unconscious at the bottom of an internal staircase at the Brentwood Ave flats in Highbury on June 14, but he has since died in Wellington Hospital.
The two-storey building of flats are owned by Housing New Zealand.
Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan said the accident was not being treated as suspicious.
"It's a very sad set of circumstances and his death has been referred to the coroner,'' he said.
"There are no suspicious circumstances.''
Neighbour Chris Sibley said the man had lived at the flats for at least seven years.
"I didn't know him well but whenever I passed him I would say "gidday'','' he said.
"He seemed like a nice man. It's quite scary that it could happen here. I think everyone will feel quite unsettled now [in the flats] that he has now passed away.''
Sibley said he was asleep when the accident occurred but saw blood at the bottom of the stairs when he went to take out his rubbish the next morning.
"I wasn't quite sure what it was. I didn't expect it would be blood though. I was shocked.''
