ROSES ARE red, violets are blue, if we deliver on Friday or Saturday we won't overcharge you.
Florists throughout the country are showing their generosity of spirit this Valentine's Day with most saying they won't add extra delivery costs to the already high-cost flowers, despite the day of romance falling on Sunday.
Most were deliberately making their deliveries on the Friday and Saturday to avoid having to charge customers more for a Sunday service.
At Roses Are Red in Auckland, they said they had already had "heaps" of Valentine's Day orders and they wouldn't be charging extra on Sunday.
Supply and demand means all florists charge more for Valentine's red roses. "So a bunch that costs you $15 [last week] is going to cost you $45 this week," said the Auckland florist.
At nzflower.co.nz a single red rose will cost $19.95, a red rose in a vase is $49.95 and a dozen red roses costs $94.95.
At Floresta Florists in Christchurch one dozen red roses, gift wrapped, will be $85, not including delivery. Staff said they would be delivering flowers on Friday and Saturday so people did not have to pay more for delivery on Sunday.
The same applied at Bud Florists in Wellington where all flowers will be delivered on Friday. Its website budflorists.co.nz shows that six wrapped red roses cost $75, a dozen costs $150, and 24 will set you back $280.
And romantics throughout the country will have plenty to keep them occupied on the day.
In Auckland, SkyCity is offering a chance to "sleep in the stars" on the night before Valentine's Day. The highest bidder on the R20 Trade Me auction will be given free rein of the Sky Deck, which is to be transformed into a luxurious hotel for the night. They will also receive a three-course meal, breakfast, a private SkyWalk and massage.
"This once in a lifetime opportunity is for a night of paradise on Sky Deck – a circular glass ring wrapped around Auckland's tallest structure, a breath-taking 60 floors up with a 360 view of Auckland," the website says.
All proceeds from the auction go to the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation.
In Wellington, romantics and animal lovers are being offered the chance to "let your animal instincts run wild at Wellington Zoo".
For $250, couples will get a three-course meal, a bottle of bubbly and be able to dine at "four intimate settings" at the zoo, including the red panda viewing deck and the African Village.
Talks on animal courtship and mating behaviour around the world will take place throughout the evening.
In Christchurch, the Canterbury Plainsmen Chorus will send a quartet to serenade your loved one anywhere in The Garden City.
"For $50 your Valentine will receive two timeless love songs sung in the barbershop style, an appropriate card, a long-stemmed rose and a selection of chocolates."
