Top New Zealand surfer Paige Hareb made a strong start to the latest world tour event, dominating her first round heat at the Fiji Pro today.

Hareb produced a mix of power and style to control the heat and surfed in solid waves at Cloudbreak.

She scored 10.50 for her two best waves to beat Hawaii's Coco Ho (7.77) and American Lakey Peterson (7.20).

Both her opponents are rated higher than world No 15 Hareb who needs a good result in Fiji to get her campaign back on track after a disappointing early exit at the previous contest in Brazil.

Hareb showed that the powerful reef waves in Fiji will suit her style, even nabbing a tube in her mix.

The win put Hareb straight through to the third round and guarantees her a ninth placing. But she has the potential to go much deeper in this contest on the left hand waves.

New Zealand's world junior champion Ella Williams came up short in her opening heat.

The waves didn't co-operate early, forcing the judges to reset the clock. On the restart Williams gained an early lead but senior world champion Carissa Moore from Hawaii soon found her rhythm.

Moore (13.16) won the heat from fellow Hawaiian Alessa Quizon (11.26) with Williams third, posting a combined total of 7.00 for her two best waves.

That put the 18-year-old from Whangamata into a sudden-death second round heat.

Williams found the going tough there with strong winds meaning deteriorating wave conditions.

Australian Tyler Wright had complete control of the heat, scoring 14.67 to Williams' 6.10.

What do you make of New World's Little Shop toys?

I agree with Gareth Morgan, toys are 'brainwashing' kids.

They're harmless fun.

They're educational.

Cunning marketing but not brainwashing.
