A New Plymouth truck driver died in Waikato Hospital after suffering head injuries when falling from his vehicle, police say.

Vernon John Broadmore, a Wills Contracting employee, died on June 18 following the fall on June 13, Sergeant Bruce Irvine said.

The truck driver had fallen from the back of his vehicle, hitting his head.

He was taken to Taranaki Base Hospital where he passed tests and was discharged, the sergeant said.

However his condition deteriorated and he returned to hospital and was then flown to Waikato, where he died five days later.

Hamilton police investigated the death on behalf of the coroner.

A spokesperson for Worksafe (the former Department of Labour) confirmed today the workplace-related death was under investigation.

The funeral at Taranaki Crematorium is at 1pm tomorrow.
