A Taranaki man who allegedly kicked his dog in the head leaving it permanently disabled has been remanded in custody.

Kevin Francis Moore, 29, was arrested at his home on June 16 and charged with two counts of cruelly ill-treating an animal, a siberian husky called Mister, on June 16.

Moore was also charged with assaulting police who arrived to deal with the incident.

The dog is now in the care of the New Plymouth District Council's Animal Control and may not be returned to its owner.

Police would be asking for reparation for the veterinarians who treated the dog, Senior Sergeant Bruce Irvine said yesterday.

Moore is also charged with an earlier domestic violence-related assault, male assaults female, on July 6 and driving while suspended on June 18.

He appeared in the New Plymouth District Court last Thursday and was remanded in custody until July 31.
