New Zealand surfer Paige Hareb has finished ninth at the US Open in California.
Hareb lost her fourth round heat against France's Johanne Defay today.
After a series of even exchanges over the first half of the 30-minute heat, Defay found two good waves late in proceedings at Huntington Beach to post 14.10 and beat Hareb's 11.03.
Hareb lost out on a valuable quarterfinals berth and had to be content with her fourth ninth placing of the year in six events.
Sadly, the solid result will do little for her world ranking of 16. Hareb could really have helped herself by toppling Defay who lies just above her in the rankings and will now take a further step forward.
Hareb earned US$9500 (NZ$11,200) and 3300 ranking points for her efforts.
The next tour stop was also in California at the Trestles break from September 9-20.
