Scott Donaldson's abandoned kayak has been found.

Donaldson 44, tried to cross the Tasman alone in a kayak in July but quit just 74km off the Taranaki coast after he suffered head and chest injuries and weather conditions deteriorated.

His kayak was located on the beach at an Oeo farm in South Taranaki about 1pm this afternoon.

Farmer Troy Stevenson said he had seen a helicopter land at the beach and had gone down for a look.

People in the helicopter spotted the kayak, he said.

He said the kayak had "Double Ditch", the name of Donaldson's crossing attempt, written on the side.

The kayak had been loaded on to a truck, he said.
