When Project Runway judge and model Heidi Klum wore his gown on the red carpet at the Emmy Awards in Los Angeles this week, Taranaki designer Sean Kelly knew he had just landed his biggest break yet.

Kelly, 24, of Hawera, is fast becoming a favourite to win season 13 of the United States television show Project Runway, with a pack of fans following his every tweet.

Sean told the Taranaki Daily News he was excited when he learned judge and supermodel Klum decided to showcase his design.

"My name was launched out into the fashion world, which is a dream for any young designer," Kelly said.

"The attention from international media has been amazing - Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, and InStyle all putting her on their best dressed list."

Kelly said his design for the dress, was inspired by Klum's personality. "The dress is a floor-length blue-fringed gown which fades from black to blue."

Kelly had 12 hours and US$200 (NZ$238) to create the dress as a challenge on Project Runway.

New Zealand fashion designer Annah Stretton said she loved the dress. "What an awesome outcome for a young budding designer to have a woman like Heidi wear and embrace their dress to a major event where so many are watching."

Kelly said he could hardly believe the progress he has made since being on Project Runway.

"I've only been in America for a couple months and then being on Project Runway it's incredible,"

"You can't just write this kind of stuff, it's the American dream."

He wanted his fans to know he appreciated all the support he was getting from his mentors and the fashion community.

"Thanks for all the support. I hear you," he said.
