Maths is easy as 1,2,3 for Spotswood College's young mathematicians.
Eight year 9 and 10 students walked away with first place in their respective categories at the Methanex Maths Spectacular team maths quiz night this week, taking the title away from New Plymouth Boys' High School, who won both sections last year.
The math competition is in its 25th year. This was Spotswood's first year to have won both the year 9 and 10 categories.
Student Rhett McAlpine, 15, said his team narrowly lost out to Boys' High for first prize at last year's event so the pressure was on.
The students had 30 minutes to solve 20 questions.
A couple of trick questions were also thrown in, but the Spotswood students were unfazed.
Nadia Hill, 13, said a lot of the problems were quite familiar.
"It was quite relevant to what we had learned," Nadia said.
Teacher Link Abrams said his heart was thumping, when he watched the scoreboard.
The group's year 9 students were Xavier Johnson, Nadia Hill, Philip James, and Ronan Avery, while the year 10 pupils were Fabian Johnson, Rebecca Spindler, Sam Holmes, and Rhett McAlpine.
