Police are investigating a suspicious fire at New Plymouth's abandoned Barrett Street Hospital.

Firefighters and police officers were called to the scene just before 1pm on Saturday.

A small fire was discovered in an empty building and extinguished quickly, Sergeant Grant Roper said.

Initial investigations suggest it was deliberately lit and police are now looking for those involved, he said.

Roper said police would like to hear from anyone with information about the fire or people seen in the area between 12.30pm and 1pm. Police can be contacted on 06 759 5500.
