Water guns will soon be in short supply as the people of New Plymouth attempt to break a Guinness world record.

Next month children's charity group Variety brings its annual convoy of more than 40 quirky vehicles to New Plymouth and is aiming to break the record for the world's largest water fight.

Locals are asked to come and help, with more than 2671 people needed to break the record which was set in October last year.

The water fight will take place on Saturday, April 4 at the Pukekura Raceway, with registrations beginning at 2pm and the fight at 3pm.

Mayor Peter Tennent is excited at the prospect of drenching the community.

"I'm in like a robber's dog," Mr Tennent said.

"We knew if we came here the Naki would get behind this and break the record," local Bash boy Warren Haakma said.

The $2 Shop has donated 1500 water guns to be given away for the attempt and will film the attempt on the day.

People can register through the Taranaki Daily News by filling out the registration forms in Wednesday or Friday newspapers and returning them to the Taranaki Daily News.

The first 1000 entries will receive a free water gun.
