A tanker carrying molasses has crashed into the Awakino Gorge, closing State Highway 3 north of New Plymouth this morning.
Sergeant Royston Betteridge, from New Plymouth police, said the driver had been trapped but was freed by 6.20am.
The truck had gone off the road and into the gorge. It was not immediately clear if it had gone into the river.
It appeared no molasses was leaking from the truck. Emergency services were notified at 5.30am when another truck driver drove out of the windy gorge into cellphone range and raised the alarm.
A rescue helicopter was on its way to the scene.
The Awakino Gorge is the coastal route between New Plymouth and Te Kuiti.
