Two Hells Angels gang members are due to appear in the New Plymouth District Court charged with a serious assault.

The men were among about 45 members of the Hells Angels and 10 members of the Red Devils motorcycle gangs who converged on New Plymouth over the weekend.

The groups arrived in the region on Friday to a less than warm welcome from police.

''They were policed pretty carefully. They were stopped coming into town at Urenui by police on mass,'' Detective Senior Sergeant Grant Coward said.

Mr Coward said the gang members were reluctantly compliant when stopped but when riding they openly flouted the road rules, putting members of the public in danger.

''Their behaviour on their motor bikes is almost lawless,'' he said.

''They run red lights and travel at speed which puts other road users at risk.''

Mr Coward said patched gang members were also seen riding the wrong way down the one way system and weaving in and out of traffic.

The 45-year-old Hells Angels gang member and 28-year-old prospect are alleged to have attacked another man at a New Plymouth bar about 2am on Saturday. Police inquiries are continuing.

The men will appear in court on Wednesday charged with injuring with intent to injure.
