Convicted paedophile Grant Allan Selby has escaped a sentence of preventive detention after undergoing intensive sexual abuse counselling.

In the High Court in New Plymouth today, Selby, in his late 40s,  was sentenced to 27 months jail.

Justice Paul Heath said he now believed that Selby was remorseful, giving credit for his efforts at rehabilitation at New Plymouth's Safer Centre, and that with suitable support mechanisms in place his risk of reoffending would be low.

Selby admitted one charge of sexual violation of a 15-year old girl at his New Plymouth home and was found guilty at trial of a second count.

His co-offender, Bruce Charnley, also in his 40s, was given preventive detention with a minimum jail term of five years during an earlier sentencing this year, while Selby's sentencing was postponed to allow counselling.
