BREAKING NEWS: Thirteen-year-old Jordan Nelson has today been sentenced to 18 years in jail for the murder of his caregiver when he shot her in the back of the head with a farm rifle at their home in Okoki North Taranaki.

The sentence was passed down in the High Court in New Plymouth by Justice Paul Heath.

Nelson pleaded guilty last month to murdering Rosemaree Kurth, 50, his step-grandfather's partner, at their home on Piko Rd, Okoki, inland from Urenui on April 15.

He shot her in the back of the head with a .22 rifle as she sat at the dining room table doing a jigsaw puzzle.

At the time his step-grandfather Kerry Locke was out on the farm tending cattle.

Police arrested Nelson as he drove the family's car along Bayly St in Waitara.
