Many Boxing Day shoppers look set to get drenched with rain forecast for most of the North Island and the top of the South Island.

A low - formerly Tropical Cyclone Evan - lies west of Auckland and is expected to continue weakening before moving southeast across the North Island later in the day.

The humid airmass remains over the North Island and northern South Island, with rain or showers expected in most places.

In Taranaki the forecast is for occasional rain, with a chance of heavy and possibly thundery falls in the afternoon and evening, a humid northerly and high of 22 degrees.
