The death of Thomas Norton Frost, 59, found at the scene of a car crash in South Taranaki, will be referred to the coroner.
Mr Frost was taken to hospital with serious head injuries after a crash on Mawhitiwhiti Rd, near Normanby, on December 12.
He died four days later. Sergeant Kim Severinsen said it was still unclear if his death was caused by the crash or a medical condition.
If Mr Frost's death was found to be the result of a fatal accident it would take Taranaki's road toll for 2012 to 17, equalling 2009's total and only two fewer than the 19 killed in 2004, and 1997, with four days still to go.
