Humans more to blame than cats

OPINION: Wednesday's Taranaki Daily News had two news stories which stand in stark contrast to each other.

Gareth Morgan wants to get rid of all cats, because ''cats are a major player in the destruction of native birds'' and New Zealand has ''a feline population of 1.4 million''.

Sir David Attenborough looks at the world quite differently. The human population of the planet is a far greater problem than that of cats: ''We are a plague on the Earth.''

Humans have played a much greater role in the extinction of native species than cats, and have ruthlessly exploited natural resources and caused pollution on a huge scale.

Gareth Morgan suggests that people should not replace a pet cat when it dies. Cats might well consider not replacing their humans when they die.
