Witt chief executive Richard Handley will leave the polytech in July.

In a shock announcement today the Witt council confirmed it would soon begin a recruitment process for the Witt chief executive position.

Mr Handley told Witt staff that despite wanting to continue his role as chief executive for another two years, the council had declined his request to renew his contract which expires in July.

In a statement to the Taranaki Daily News the Witt council said it had a responsibility to secure a leader who would continue to keep the momentum that Mr Handley had established while also responding to the challenges of the future.

Since arriving at Witt five years ago Mr Handley, 66, had lead the polytech from a position of financial turmoil to a respected tertiary provider with a positive financial outlook.

Under Mr Handley's guidance there were also significant advances in academic performance and building community partnerships.

Mr Handley said he had been invited by the council to put his name forward for the future position of CEO but declined the offer.
