Keep our beach
It seems ironic that while the Auckland Council seeks to reclaim the city's waterfront for public use, New Plymouth appears to be heading in the opposite direction.
There was no need for Port Taranaki to locate the outsized palm-kernel storage sheds on waterfront reclamation at Ngamotu.
While the marina proposal will be popular with recreational fishermen and boaties, there is little doubt that this project will further impact on Ngamotu Beach.
The port authorities are campaigning to have Belt Rd extended to the Lee Breakwater, at ratepayers' expense.
This would give the port the opportunity to close the seaward end of Bayly Rd for public use, shutting off Ngamotu Beach.
Mr Weaver's claim that ''We want to maintain Ngamotu for as long as possible'' means little.
The port company needs to be reminded that it is owned by the Taranaki Regional Council, and indirectly, by the ratepayers.
Please keep our beach.
