A suspected oil spill on State Highway 3, just south of Manutahi, in South Taranaki has caused a car to spin off the road.
Sergeant Sandy Shaw said the vehicle started to slide off the road about 1.30pm today and ploughed into a tree, just missing a power pole.
The 24-year-old driver was not injured.
Mrs Shaw said police had had reports of a tractor leaking oil onto the road but it had also been raining.
Investigations are continuing.
Police at the scene are slowing down traffic in both directions and grit will be put on the road soon.
