OPINION: It is because of the attitude of people like Selwyn Low (letters, Feb 2) that we have a cat problem.
Gareth Morgan's campaign is in response to this. Contrary to Low's view, research shows cat owners seriously underestimate the kill rate of their pets.
To verify any claim that cats don't kill native birds, the cats would need to be electronically monitored continuously for 24 hours a day, over many months.
Basically, Morgan is saying be a responsible cat owner. Keep your cats indoors, especially at night, don't let them roam on neighbouring properties, and seriously consider whether you will replace your cat when it passes away. It seems a sensible solution to me.
