A 54-year-old woman was seriously injured after the car she was driving ploughed into a truck in wet weather in South Taranaki last night.

The crash happened on State Highway 3, south of Mokoia at the Whakamara Rd intersection shortly after 9.20pm.

Sergeant Sandy Shaw said the southbound car lost control on a corner and was hit by an oncoming truck.

The Patea woman, who suffered serious injuries, had to be cut from the wreckage and was taken to Taranaki Base Hospital by St John Ambulance, Mrs Shaw said.

It was too early to speculate on the cause of the crash but Mrs Shaw said there was ''serious surfacing flooding'' and visibility was low when police arrived.

The driver of the truck was unharmed and the serious crash unit will be investigating.
