Strong cross winds are expected to cause flights to be diverted from New Plymouth airport today.

Manager Kevin Hill said a flight scheduled to arrive at 12.20pm from Auckland had to land in Palmerston North due to winds gusting up to 45 knots (83 kmh).

''They can only take up to about 34 knots before it's considered too dangerous,'' Mr Hill said.

Buses would be used to transport passengers to and from their destinations until the wind dropped.

''It looks as though the wind is going to be with us for a while,'' Mr Hill said.

Yes, we shouldn't sweep it under the carpet and pretend it doesn't happen.

No, it's upsetting and a private matter and there's the danger of copycats.
