Callum Salisbury, 19, was lucky to walk away without a scratch after he rolled his car in New Plymouth just before 8pm last night.

Mr Salisbury was driving north along Mangorei Rd when he fell asleep at the wheel and went through a hedge.

His car landed upside down in the Tupare Gardens.

''The last thing I remember was seeing the school and then the fence,'' Mr Salisbury said.

He climbed out of the vehicle unharmed before emergency services arrived.

His drowsiness might have been a result of driving around until 3am the night before, he said.

Sergeant Pat Duffy said Salisbury had made a lucky escape.

''There's not a lot of head room left in that car.

''That's one way of visiting the gardens.''

A fire appliance and ambulance attended as a precautionary measure but were not needed, he said.

Mr Salisbury was wearing a seatbelt and alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
