Motorists were delayed and diverted after diesel spilled on two separate stretches of road north of New Plymouth this morning.

Sergeant George White said one spill was at the intersection of De Havilland Drive and State Highway 3, while another was at the corner of Princess St and SH3 in Waitara.

He said it appeared the spills had come from a truck taking diesel from Bell Block to a well site in Tikorangi which had been leaking.

''Something's been not quite closed properly.''

Enough fuel was spilt that it was puddling on the road.

''Diesel is very very very slippery.''

He said fire brigades, the Taranaki Regional Council and roading contractors were working to contain and clean up the spill.
