Traffic diversions were put in place after a collision between a hot rod and a truck heading into New Plymouth along the Bell Block by-pass this morning.
The accident happened about 8.50am and the two occupants of the car had to be taken to hospital.
Sergeant Stephen Richardson said it appeared a mechanical fault with the hot rod had caused its suspension to collapse and it locked up in front of the following truck.
Mr Richardson praised the truck driver's quick reactions.
''I think that the truck driver did well but it's just one of those things, he probably reacted the best he can to prevent extra carnage,'' he said.
The road was reopened about 10am.
