The New Plymouth fire brigade was called to a ceiling fire on Devon St West in the early hours of this morning.
Emergency services spent over three hours at the scene, after being alerted to the blaze at 4am.
Senior Station Officer David Utumapu said neither of the two people living in the house was hurt in the fire, largely due to having working smoke alarms.
''The fire had been smouldering in the ceiling for hours beforehand, but thanks to smoke alarms the house is intact and no one was hurt,'' he said.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
