The Jean Sandel Retirement Village's new hospital care wing was officially opened on Friday.
The new hospital provides 39 rooms, with each resident enjoying their own room complete with en suite, overlooking an internal courtyard and with views of Mt Taranaki and surrounding landscape.
The facility was opened by New Plymouth Mayor Peter Tennent and wife Rosemary.
Village manager Jenny Farrell said the highly-regarded, enthusiastic nursing team was delighted to offer the elderly of New Plymouth a first-class resthome and hospital facility.
The village, in Whalers Gate, has fast become a feature of the New Plymouth landscape, and is already home to more than 150 residents.
The village opened its resthome in June last year.
The village also plans to offer specialist Alzheimer's and dementia care, meaning it will then offer a continuum of care so residents can be looked after no matter how their needs change. Mr Tennent praised the new hospital wing as another option for elderly people and their families in Taranaki, set in a very positive, vibrant environment.
"The western suburbs of New Plymouth are growing and developing, and the Jean Sandel Retirement Village is a wonderful addition to the local community," Mr Tennent said.
The village also offers independent living townhouses and assisted living serviced apartments, all with resort-style facilities for residents to enjoy.
They include a bowling green, grand internal atrium, village centre, dining room, bar, indoor swimming pool and spa, gym, hair salon, beauty therapy, and movie theatre.
Jean Sandel Retirement Village is a member of the Ryman Healthcare Group.
Ryman is a six time winner of the Australasian Aged Care Housing Award for Best Retirement Village in New Zealand, and provides homes and care services to more than 4500 New Zealanders, employing more than 2000 staff.
