There were celebrations but no bubbly for Charlotte Ward the night her beauty spa was named the supreme Taranaki Top Shop 2012 winner last month.
Instead she was busy carb- loading for the Auckland marathon the following day.
So while her team of Silk Spa staff partied at the Westpac Taranaki Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards, Ward sat in an Auckland Hotel room knocking back a protein shake and dry chicken pasta.
Silk Spa was up against 310 Taranaki retail shops which had been nominated by the public for the Taranaki Daily News Top Shop 2012.
Silk Spa's victory won it $1000 cash and an advertising package with the Daily News worth $2500.
Ward said when she received the news in a text message she was bouncing off the walls and even had a wee cry.
"I was running around like a headless chicken for five minutes," Ward said.
The 40-year-old mother of two said knowing that Silk Spa had been named Taranaki's Top Shop was the motivation she needed to get her to the marathon finish line.
"It did actually help me a few times during the race."
Ward said she was genuinely surprised to hear Silk Spa had won.
"I know my girls are awesome but I really didn't think we would win."
She said winning the Top Shop award and running a marathon completed her bucket list for the year.
Top Shop was largely about pleasing the customer - something which came naturally to Silk Spa, she said.
"As beauty therapists you've got to love looking after people."
Things were particularly busy for Silk Spa at the moment with business always picking up this time of year as women prepared for the summer months, she said.
Silk Spa had just hired a new full-time staff member, taking the team to five in total.
Ward said the success of the business largely came down to traditional values of fun-focused, friendly staff and a relaxed environment.
Located on Carrington St, Silk Spa opened nearly three years ago.
