Taranaki has crept up into the top half of ASB's regional economic rankings but our consumer confidence is amongst the worst in New Zealand.
The rankings were released today and rate the 16 regions based on retail and construction figures, consumer confidence surveys and information on house sales.
Each region is given a star rating, five being the best and one the worst.
Although there were declines in retail sales and residential construction in Taranaki over the past year, employment growth of 10 per cent helped push the region into the top half of the ratings.
Taranaki, Wellington, Tasman, Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast and Canterbury all received three stars.
Despite improvements in employment, consumer confidence in Taranaki is amongst the lowest in the country, the report said.
Auckland topped the ratings for the September quarter, thanks to strong population growth driving retail spending and the local housing market.
Gisborne and Hawke's Bay were the worst regional performers with one star each.
