Eltham resident Ben Neilson has just won a three-year Contact Energy apprenticeship at New Zealand's first underground gas storage facility.
The 19-year-old is one of 26 school leavers to be accepted into a national apprenticeship programme for the electricity industry.
Neilson will be based at the Stratford Waihapa production station, but helping out at the company's Ahuroa gas storage facility.
The apprenticeship is for a national certificate in electrical engineering, electricity supply, mechanical engineering, and occupational health and safety.
Ben is the first Contact apprentice to work on Ahuroa.
