From l'escargot to taco - a Mexican restaurant is set to open its doors in the former Andre's premises on New Plymouth's Brougham St.

Restaurant chain Mexico Food and Liquor will open its seventh restaurant in April. Other restaurants in the chain include branches in Auckland's Britomart and Ponsonby areas as well as Hamilton and Sydney.

The company is owned by Auckland shareholders and the first Britomart restaurant was opened in early 2012 by creative director Mimi Gilmour.

Shareholder Nick McCaw said he was excited to move the business into New Plymouth.

"We view Taranaki as a key growth area that is fast emerging as a cultural hub."'

The Brougham St building, which had housed the city's much loved Andre's L'Escargot Restaurant for 37 years, is a category two historic place.

Two buildings, built in 1884 and 1896, were combined in 1995 to accommodate the restaurant.

After the death of its owner Andre Teissonniere in June last year, the property was put on the market and in October it sold at auction to New Plymouth property developer Robert Angus for $570,000.
