Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's mellifluous tones will grace the ears of classical music devotees in Taranaki tonight.

A small welcoming committee greeted the world- renowned soprano at New Plymouth airport yesterday as she stepped off the plane from Auckland.

Te Kanawa, 70, is in town for her concert An Evening with Dame Kiri at the TSB Showplace tonight.

Te Kanawa seemed uninterested in speaking to the Taranaki Daily News. When asked how the flight was, she responded: "It came up and it went down."

She was cryptic when asked when she would next perform in New Plymouth.

"Are you telling me I'm going to die?

"If you're telling me I'm going to die, then no, I won't be back."

The concert is at 7.30pm and some tickets are still available at ticketmaster.co.nz or by calling the TSB Showplace on 06-759 6712.
