Meet the November Monica Brewster Evening guest speaker, artist Shilpa Gupta, at 6pm today.

Gupta lives and works in Mumbai, India, and creates artwork using interactive video, websites, objects, photographs, sound and public performances to examine ideas of desire, religion, notions of security on the street and on the imagined border.

Gupta is the Govett-Brewster's International Artist in Residence for 2013 and is in New Plymouth for November to research and develop work for her upcoming solo exhibition at the gallery.

Entry is $12, Friends of the Govett-Brewster $8, students with ID free.

Summertime change

The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery is in changeover mode until Friday, November 30.

The gallery's installation team is working to take down the Sub- Topical Heat exhibition.

The new summer exhibitions, Len Lye: The New Yorker and Singular Companions: Sculpture from the Collection, will open on Saturday, December 1.

The Govett-Brewster art and design shop will still be open during this time and visitors are welcome to see the information lounge and choose films to watch at the gallery's film archive.

Painting awards

The Taranaki Society of Arts Small Painting awards 2012 presentations will be held in the Gables Gallery, Brooklands Park, New Plymouth at 7pm on Friday.

All entrants and society members are invited to attend. The two judges are artist and teacher Yvonne Webber and artist Rae Van't Hof.

Drinks will be provided and guests are asked to bring a small plate of finger food.

The exhibition runs until Sunday, January 13.

All works are for sale and eftpos is available at the gallery, which is open at weekends and on public holidays, except Christmas Day, from 1pm to 4pm.

Witt exhibitions

The annual Witt art, design and media exhibitions are on show.

The exhibitions run until November 29 from 10am to 4pm daily.

Open home

Urenui artist John McLean has opened a gallery at his home.

His inaugural exhibition, called @ Home, is open to the public until Sunday, December 2.

McLean is showing a collection of oil paintings and framed mixed media works on paper.

The well-signposted gallery is at 29 Pukearuhe Rd, Urenui. It is open daily from 10am.
